Journey
A dull sense of departure
Knowing I am leaving
Only to arrive again
A short time later
Station Stop #1: York
A place I've been to previously
See the minster from the window
And old platform four
A tannoy echoes, names the station York
Station Stop #2: Leeds
The entrance to the station
All snow-dusted, buildings loom
From grey-white gloom and
whisper 'Leeds' together
The inside line at
Twenty-five past three
The faces unfamiliar rush
and I remember that
I've done the same
Station Stop #3: Doncaster
Doncaster, an unknown station
Helps me to remember where
I'm heading - where my heart
Has been before but I have never
Quiet, unfamiliar bridges
Strolls a guard, intent
On something else and then
The journey oddly broken here continues
Station Stop #4: Grantham
A spire my first impression, then
A little station much like Stoke
We wait; the skies are blue
My thoughts are turned, I pause
To think of you
Station Stop #5: Peterborough
The smell of overheated rubber
Once again accompanies arrival at
Another stop along the way
That punctuates my journey
The gathered sixty-six and sixty-sevens
Line the sunbathed track the left hand side
And I can see an orange readout
Reading out there's only two more stops to go
Station Stop #6: Stevenage
At Stevenage the evening has
Arrived as has the train
A manly hug, two teen girls stand
And peer. A whistle blows
Arrival
A sharp sense of arrival
Knowing I'm arriving
Only to depart again
A short time later
End
